On Monday, October 15, the brothers of the Beta Epsilon chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated, kicked off their "Real World: Business Weekly" Sean Nickols, director of educational activities and programs and his assistant, Lorenza Coffin, welcomed everyone to the event before introducing the guest speaker, Zebedee Talley, III.

Talley is a career counselor for the Office of Career Services located in Murphy Hall. Before coming to A&T in 2005, Talley spent six years working as a corporate recruiter. He worked for several Fortune 500 companies in the areas of human resources and initial consulting.

The event titled "Is Your Resume Right for the Job," which was held in the New Science Building, was the first in a week-long series of events that will address issues pertaining to proper-business etiquette.

The purpose of the event was to give tips and advice on creating and using the perfect resume, cover letter and portfolio. Due to Talley's extensive experience in the corporate realm, there was much practical advice he was able to offer the students in attendance.

He touched on topics such as; what type of paper to use for making a resume, the average time it takes for an employer to look through a resume and what type of words and phrases could be used to turn an average resume into an above-average one.

He also discussed the importance of networking and joining groups that help improve overall professionalism and public speaking.

Some of these groups include the Student Cluster and Toastmasters. Nickols and Coffin thanked everyone for coming out. Nickols felt that the event reached its intended goal.

"This event taught me that we have a lot of resources out there, but may not necessarily know how to take advantage of them," he said.

Bryan Hill, a sophomore industrial engineering major, echoed similar sentiments.

"I felt this event was very educational while also being real helpful," he said. For those interested in learning more about business matters such as budgeting, entrepreneurship and internship advice, then you can attend any of the events that Alpha Phi Alpha will be hosting on campus from now until Oct. 19.
